A co-founder of artificial intelligence firm OpenAI, John Schulman, has announced his departure to join rival company Anthropic, according to a social media post on platform X late Monday.
Schulman stated that his decision was driven by a desire to focus more on AI alignment and to engage in hands-on technical work.
In a separate X post, Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s President and co-founder, revealed he is taking a sabbatical until the end of the year. The news of these departures was initially reported by The Information, which also noted that Peter Deng, a product manager who joined OpenAI last year, has left the company.
The company has recently experienced notable personnel changes, including the reassignment of AI safety leader Aleksander Madry to a different role in July.
Earlier this year, Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder and chief scientist, exited OpenAI in May, and Andrej Karpathy, another founding member, left in February to start an AI-focused education platform in July.
In related developments, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but departed three years later, has revived his lawsuit against the company and its CEO Sam Altman. Musk alleges that OpenAI has prioritized profits and commercial interests over the public good.
