OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is set to appoint several new board members in March, bringing an end to an impasse that began when the former board ousted CEO Sam Altman in November.
Despite Altman’s quick return and the introduction of a new initial board chaired by former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor, the company has actively sought six additional members with expertise in various fields, including technology, safety, and policy.
Microsoft will assume a non-voting observer position on the board, as indicated by Altman in November. OpenAI investors are not expected to secure seats on the non-profit’s board.
The previous board, besides Altman, included co-founder Greg Brockman, chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner, director of strategy at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is reportedly scrutinizing internal communications by Altman as part of an investigation into potential misleading of the company’s investors, according to earlier reports by The Wall Street Journal.
