African Visa Openness Index has ranked Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda, Seychelles, and Nigeria as the top five performers for 2023.
Based on the Africa Visa Openness Index, the countries continue to be a representation of transparency and cooperation in the evolving African cooperation scene.
Over the course of 2016, the average score of the top 10 countries increased to 0.861 from 0.910, while the average score of the top 20 countries increased to 0.734 from 0.849.
The top five countries in the AVOI are equally from West and East Africa: Benin and The Gambia, Nigeria are from West Africa, while Rwanda and Seychelles are from East Africa. Rwanda is among the top performers on the continent for the first time this year.
Since the AVOI’s founding, Seychelles has continuously performed well; in 2018, it shared the top spot with Benin after previously holding it by itself. 2020 saw The Gambia join the top two performers, while 2023 saw Rwanda and Nigeria bring the total to five.
