OPay says it has exceeded 45 million users and now serves more than one million merchants and businesses nationwide, highlighting the rapid expansion of digital payments and agency banking in the country.
The fintech firm, which began operations in Nigeria in 2018, has grown into a major force in driving financial inclusion and supporting the shift toward a cashless economy.
Its green Point-of-Sale terminals are now widely visible across markets, transport hubs, roadside kiosks, and neighbourhood stores, as millions of Nigerians increasingly depend on digital platforms for transfers, bill payments, cash withdrawals, and everyday financial transactions.
The company’s expansion reflects the rising adoption of fintech services among underserved populations, including small business owners, traders, artisans, and residents of communities with limited access to traditional banking infrastructure.
OPay says its mission is to advance financial inclusion through technology, particularly in emerging markets where access to formal financial services remains limited.
The company says its digital wallet platform was designed to deliver affordable, easy-to-use financial services to unbanked and underbanked populations, while also supporting Nigeria’s broader cashless policy agenda.
Its efforts toward expanding financial inclusion have also received regulatory recognition.
In 2024, Central Bank of Nigeria awarded OPay the Financial Inclusion Innovation Award in acknowledgement of its impact.
OPay’s expansion has been driven largely by rising demand for digital financial services among individuals and businesses across Nigeria.
On the consumer side, the platform provides services such as money transfers, airtime top-ups, utility bill payments, debit cards, and savings products, all accessible through mobile technology.
According to company data, OPay’s monthly active transacting users rose from 25.13 million in 2024 to 39.32 million by the end of 2025.
The company’s merchant-focused ecosystem also delivers payment solutions for SMEs, agents, and enterprise operators through Point-of-Sale terminals, QR code payments, online payment systems, and other digital business tools.
