Ondo gov presents new tax bill to Assembly

Ondo State Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has forwarded a new tax bill to the Ondo State House of Assembly for legislative scrutiny, in preparation for the federal government’s planned implementation of a new national tax regime scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026.

The development was disclosed by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, following the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday.

A statement released by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Ebenezer Adeniyan, confirmed that Governor Aiyedatiwa personally presided over the council meeting where the matter was discussed.

Dr Ajulo explained that the proposed bill is intended to harmonise Ondo State’s fiscal policies with the provisions of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and the broader reforms accompanying the legislation.

“This bill ensures that Ondo State’s tax framework aligns with national standards, promoting efficiency, transparency, and sustainable revenue generation for the benefit of all residents,” he said.

The Attorney General further noted that the proposed tax structure is designed to stimulate economic growth, improve the quality of public services, and establish a more equitable tax system within the state.

“It will also provide relief for low-income earners and support small businesses, integrating Ondo State into the evolving national tax landscape,” Ajulo said.

He also appealed to members of the public to actively participate in the legislative process by offering constructive contributions, stressing that such engagement would help ensure the bill adequately reflects the interests of all stakeholders.

In a related development, the Head of Service in the state, Mr Bayo Philip, announced that Friday, January 2, 2026, has been declared a work-free day for civil servants across Ondo State.

“This holiday allows workers sufficient time to return from the New Year celebrations. Resumption will be on Monday, January 5, and will feature the state’s customary first workday prayer meeting at the Governor’s Office complex,” Philip stated.
