Ondo doctors threaten strike over unmet federal agreements

Doctors in Ondo State under the Association of Resident Doctors at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, have urged the Federal Government to take urgent steps to prevent a breakdown in healthcare delivery across the country.

The doctors declared their readiness to join the nationwide strike scheduled to commence on Monday, following the directive of their national leadership.

The National Association of Resident Doctors had earlier announced the planned industrial action to compel the Federal Government to implement agreements reached with resident doctors.

The strike action is coming after the Federal Government failed to fully implement the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the association in November 2025.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Chairman of the Association of Resident Doctors, FMC Owo chapter, Dada Tosin, disclosed that the decision to join the strike was reached after an emergency meeting held on Friday.

According to the association, the national body had granted the Federal Government a four-week ultimatum to implement the agreed demands, but the deadline elapsed without what it described as meaningful compliance.

The doctors identified poor welfare conditions, non-payment of outstanding arrears, and unresolved training-related challenges as major issues that led to the declaration of the strike.

They appealed to the Federal Government to urgently address the demands in order to avert a looming crisis in the nation’s health sector.

The statement read, “The strike action, when it resumes on Monday, will be total and will only be called off when the nine minimum demands are met. The demands include reinstatement of the unjustly sacked doctors of FTH Lokoja, payment of salary and promotion arrears ranging from three to nine months, full implementation of the professional allowance table, and clarification of entry-level issues, among others.”

The Association of Resident Doctors at FMC Owo also reaffirmed its full solidarity with the national leadership of NARD.

The group emphasised its commitment to safeguarding the welfare, professional dignity, and working conditions of its members.

“We are calling on the Federal Government to act swiftly to avert a breakdown in healthcare delivery in Nigeria,” the statement added.
