Some Nigerians have reacted as the Central Bank of Nigeria debunked the announcement made by the First Lady, Aisha Buhari on Tuesday that her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari, has ordered the CBN to reissue and recirculate the old “N200, N500 and N1000 notes”
The news which has been confirmed fake by the CBN was posted on the Instagram page of the first lady. Meanwhile, the post has now been deleted as at the time of gathering this report.
The Central Bank of Nigeria has said it would prosecute those responsible for sharing the false information that banks have been allowed to recirculate the old N500 and N1000.
The CBN’s Twitter post that debunked the fake news reads, “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to a FAKE PRESS RELEASE purported to have emanated from the Bank to the effect that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reissuance and release of old N500 and N1000 notes as legal tender in the country.
“The Bank is working with the law enforcement agencies to investigate, apprehend and prosecute the purveyors of this fake news.”
The statement released emphasised that Buhari’s policy of N200 note remains till April 10.
The Instagram post has now been deleted although her spokesperson, Suleman Hassan, said he’s not aware of the news.

@Gentlejerome thinks, “They are trying to cause confusion by all means, hence they are making a last attempt by using President Buhari’s closest family member. I’ve told them to be patient. Naira will be in full circulation after the elections.”
@gladysanyanna called for justice stating, “I hope no one is above the Law? Would the president’s wife be made to apologise for leading the populace astray?”
In his tweet regarding Aisha’s fake news, @dolawanle said, “I’ll like to know what is going through Aisha Buhari’s mind right now & why she is doing what she is doing. I was told that she’d removed the post on the Naira issue & I checked it out. She had but she looks like a troubled wife @ the moment. Is President Buhari abusing her too?”
