Ogun, NEPC partner to boost cashew industry

The Ogun State Government has maintained its commitment to partnering with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council and other stakeholders to enhance the cashew industry.

This was highlighted in a statement on Wednesday by the State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, during a one-day intervention programme and distribution of cashew seedlings to farmers, organised by NEPC in partnership with the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, according to The Punch.

The event, which took place at the Obas’ Complex in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, was designed to leverage Ogun State’s comparative advantage in cashew production and support the One State, One Product initiative spearheaded by the State Committee on Export Promotion.

Onasanya emphasized that this initiative is crucial for positioning Ogun State as a significant player in Nigeria’s cashew export market, thereby contributing to the nation’s broader economic diversification goals.

“Cashew has long been a crop of economic importance in Ogun State, as it can significantly contribute to the state’s revenue, create jobs, and promote sustainable development in our rural communities,” Onasanya said.

The Head of Service, described the program as a pivotal opportunity to tackle issues related to capacity building, infrastructure, technology, and market access for cashew farmers.

He urged stakeholders to maintain their collaborative efforts, emphasizing that the program is designed to establish a robust and sustainable cashew industry.

Onasanya highlighted that this initiative will not only benefit local farmers and exporters but also contribute significantly to the state’s and Nigeria’s economic development.

The host commissioner, Adebola Sofela underscored the importance of cashew production to Ogun State’s agricultural landscape.

He noted that it is a crucial driver of economic growth, employment, and a means of sustaining their families.

The NEPC Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Nonye Ayeni, represented by NEPC Director of Product Development, Mrs Evelyn Obidike, said the council is not resting on its oars.

She emphasized that NEPC, led by Executive Director Nonye Ayeni, is dedicated to advancing the One State, One Product initiative to enhance the industry’s global standing.

In his his goodwill message, the Akarigbo of Remo Land, HRM Babatunde Ajayi, represented by Elemunren of Emuren HRH, Adesegun Alowole, eulogised the state government for the synergy with NEPC to increase cashew production in the state and solicited for more interventions to support the farmers in all local government areas of the state.
