Nvidia is stepping up its push for open-source artificial intelligence models with the release of Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, less than three weeks after Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang publicly entered the industry debate over open AI systems.

Huang took to X in late July to defend open-source AI models, joining a broader discussion among technology companies over how the U.S. should regulate the rapidly developing technology.

The latest model, which Nvidia describes as “lightweight,” is designed to run on a single graphics processing unit in a personal computer, making it more accessible for developers and researchers.

Nemotron 3.5 Lightning is Nvidia’s first open-source model since Huang joined other technology executives in calling on the U.S. government to support open AI models while avoiding what they described as premature restrictions that could drive innovation overseas.

“Free AI should be great for hardware,” Huang told Axios in an interview last month. “Free AI should be great for chips.”

Huang became directly involved in a debate that emerged in Washington after China’s Moonshot AI unveiled Kimi K3, an artificial intelligence model that narrowed the performance gap with leading U.S. models.
