The Nigeria Railway Corporation has finalized preparations to begin night operations in the second quarter of 2024.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the NRC’s Managing Director, Fidet Okhiria, said this in an interview on Monday.
“What is limiting us is the night operations, and that is not how trains should operate. The train is designed to run continuously. People may prefer to travel in the evening, but due to the country’s security condition, we only travel during the day.”
“We intend to bring back passenger and goods trains from Port-Harcourt to Aba, Lagos to Kano and Kaduna because of the dry ports,” Okhiria stated.
According to the NRC DG, this simply means that the corporation will begin six train trips daily on the standard gauge train across the board.
“We are going to increase the number of train trips from Lagos to Ibadan, Warri to Itakpe, and Abuja to Kaduna to six, which means the trips will be three times to and three times fro, making six trips in a day.”
“The journeys will begin before the second quarter of 2024. They are currently conducting four trips—two up and two down across the board,” he said.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation traces its history to the year 1898, when the first railroad in Nigeria was constructed by the British colonial government.
Although it’s services have been on and off, the Nigerian Railway Corporation seems to be performing better in recent years.
