NPA, terminal operator restore 970m of Apapa quay apron

Barge operators decries NPA's dollar charges

APM Terminals Apapa, working with the Nigerian Ports Authority, has finished upgrading 970 meters of quay apron surface at Apapa.

In a Sunday statement, APMT called the project a key infrastructure effort to enhance safety, sustainability, and efficiency at Nigeria’s busiest container terminal.

According to APMT Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen, the project was completed on schedule by using the right equipment and a committed workforce.

He explained that the quay apron is one of the most operationally sensitive and high-risk areas within the terminal, presenting significant challenges.

He noted that carrying out major repairs in this area without interrupting daily terminal operations demanded careful planning and outstanding coordination.

Despite these challenges, he emphasized that the project was completed smoothly, with no safety or security incidents—“a testament to the professionalism and dedication of everyone involved.”

“In total, the project achieved the successful rehabilitation of 970 meters of quay surface, completed through 12,640 man-hours executed safely and efficiently. This achievement reflects the strength of collaboration between APMT Apapa, NPA’s engineering team, and all stakeholders who contributed to this vital infrastructure milestone,” Knudsen said.

Steen gave special recognition to the NPA’s Engineering department for making remarkable progress ahead of schedule.

“In particular, we commend the unwavering leadership and oversight provided by the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, Executive Director, Engineering & Technical Services, Abba Umar, and General Manager, Engineering, Mukhtar Isa, for the tireless on-site inspections and persistent coordination throughout the project,” he said.

Since securing the terminal concession in 2006, APM Terminals Apapa has invested $438 million in upgrading facilities, acquiring new equipment, and enhancing workforce skills.
