North Korea has reportedly created a new hacking group under its intelligence agency, the Reconnaissance General Bureau, with a focus on AI-driven cyberattacks.
The new unit—named Research Center 227—will develop offensive hacking technologies and programs, according to Daily NK, a news outlet specializing in North Korean affairs.
The report states that the unit will study Western cybersecurity systems and networks, enhance North Korea’s ability to steal digital assets, and develop AI-based techniques for information theft. Additionally, it will coordinate with the country’s overseas hacking units.
North Korean cybercriminals have been linked to major global cyberattacks, particularly targeting cryptocurrency exchanges. One of the most significant incidents was the recent $1.4 billion hack of the crypto platform Bybit.
The U.S. National Security Agency and the FBI have previously accused North Korea’s RGB of involvement in hacking and espionage activities.
