Finland’s telecom giant, Nokia announced a settlement with Amazon regarding alleged patent infringements related to video technologies used in Amazon’s streaming services and devices on Monday.
The agreement settles all ongoing litigation between Nokia and Amazon, though the terms remain confidential, according to AFP.
Nokia first sued Amazon in October 2023, alleging patent violations in five jurisdictions: the U.K., the EU’s Unified Patent Court, Germany, India, and the U.S.
The claims targeted Amazon’s Prime Video service and various devices, focusing on patents related to video compression, content delivery, content recommendation, and hardware aspects.
German courts initially ruled in favour of Nokia, determining that Amazon’s streaming devices and services infringed upon Nokia’s video-related patents. For instance, in September 2024, the Munich Regional Court found that Amazon’s Fire TV devices utilized Nokia’s patented technologies without authorization.
Besides Amazon, Nokia also sued HP (formerly Hewlett-Packard) in a U.S. court in October 2023, alleging unauthorized use of its video technology. That lawsuit was settled in October 2024.
