The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited said on Thursday, August 3, via its Twitter account that it is collaborating with NIPCO Plc to distribute compressed natural gas to Nigerians.
This information follows President Tinubu’s recent declaration that his administration would provide local governments and states with buses powered by compressed natural gas.
The corporation made the following claims in a press release that was signed by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer at NNPCL, Garba Deen Muhammad.
“The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited is pleased to announce a strategic relationship with NIPCO Gas Limited to deploy compressed natural gas stations across the country as part of its commitment to offering motorists a less expensive alternative fuel.
“This historic partnership intends to boost access to CNG, extend our CNG infrastructure, and speed up the use of less expensive, cleaner alternative fuel for cars, buses, and Keke NAPEP, which will lower transportation costs significantly and promote sustainable national economic growth.
“Three Mother stations will be built as part of the NNPC-NIPCO strategic cooperation, which calls for the construction of 35 cutting-edge CNG stations nationally.
“Once fully operational, the stations can handle over 200,000 vehicles every day, drastically lowering both the cost of transportation and the price of petrol for Nigerians.”
Project implementation will be placed in stages. The second phase, which will include 35 CNG stations, will assist the inter-city transition and be available by the end of 2024. The first phase, which consists of 21 CNG stations, will support intra-city mobility and be ready by the first quarter of 2024. Additional 56 stations being deployed by NNPC Retail across the nation will supplement this.
“NIPCO Gas Limited has converted over 7,000 vehicles to run on CNG and currently manages 14 CNG stations throughout Nigeria. The technical expertise and practical experience of NIPCO will ensure the success of this effort and increase its beneficial effects on the economy of the country.
“This program would make use of Nigeria’s rich natural gas resources to help Nigerians in a number of ways, including by providing access to cheaper fuel, lowering the cost of transportation, reducing carbon emissions, and establishing new value chains for businesses and job possibilities.
“NNPC Limited anticipates further private sector involvement by oil marketing firms to increase the supply and penetration of CNG.
“NNPC Limited remains committed to delivering energy with dependability and to generating value for the future prosperity of Nigeria with our partners.”
