Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has officially joined the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0, affirming its dedication to environmental sustainability.
This was announced in statement by the company via its official X handle on Monday.
This significant step aligns with NNPC’s goal of achieving net-zero methane intensity by 2030, highlighting its commitment to reducing environmental impact and contributing to global climate efforts.
OGMP 2.0, an initiative spearheaded by the United Nations Environment Programme, is a globally recognized program that helps oil and gas companies reduce methane emissions.
It provides a comprehensive framework for accurate measurement and reporting, enabling participants to improve transparency, enhance accountability, and adopt best practices to significantly cut methane emissions.
“As a leading National Oil Company (NOC), NNPC Limited recognizes the critical role it plays in reducing methane emissions and fostering environmental accountability,” the statement noted. “OGMP 2.0 provides a robust, measurement-based international reporting framework, enabling companies to enhance transparency, scale accountability, and adopt best practices for methane emissions reduction.”
In December 2023, NNPC Limited made a significant move towards environmental sustainability by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with TotalEnergies to deploy advanced methane detection technology in its upstream operations.
The agreement focuses on the use of the Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Application, a cutting-edge technology designed to monitor and reduce methane emissions.
The partnership resulted from NNPC Limited’s participation in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, UAE.
The AUSEA technology, developed by TotalEnergies, will allow NNPC Limited to accurately measure methane emissions at its upstream operation sites.
With precise data, the company can develop and implement effective mitigation strategies, ensuring compliance with global environmental standards and reducing its carbon footprint.
Speaking on the partnership, NNPC Ltd.’s Executive Vice President, Upstream, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, emphasized the importance of this collaboration.
