The Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China Engineering and Machinery Corporation to jointly develop the Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant project.
This was disclosed in a statement by the company via a post on X on Saturday, highlighting the project’s significance for Nigeria’s economy.
NNPCL’s Executive Vice President of Gas Power & New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, and CEMC Nigeria’s Chairman, Zhang Daguang, signed the MoU on behalf of their organizations.
The GIPP Phase 1 Project, also referred to as the Abuja IPP, will have a capacity of 350 megawatts and is a key component of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Project.
This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s Gas Master Plan infrastructure strategy, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing energy infrastructure and economic development.
The post reads, “This Thursday, in Beijing, China, NNPC Limited and China Engineering & Machinery Corporation (CMEC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the co-funding of the Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant (GIPP) phase-1 Project.
“NNPC Ltd.’s Executive Vice President, Gas Power & New Energy, Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye and Chairman of CMEC Nigeria, Mr. Zhang Daguang, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective companies.
“Also known as the Abuja IPP, the 350MW GIPP Phase 1 Project is one of the key anchor projects of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Project which is in line with Nigeria’s Gas Master Plan infrastructure blueprint.”
The 350-megawatt GIPP Phase 1, also known as the Abuja IPP, is expected to enhance power generation, create jobs, reduce gas flaring, and support industrial development.
It is a crucial part of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Project, a $2.8 billion initiative led by NNPCL.
This project aims to bolster Nigeria’s gas pipeline infrastructure to meet rising power demands and facilitate the growth of gas-based industries, particularly in Abuja and Northern Nigeria.
