The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has confirmed a major pipeline explosion near the Tebijor, Okpele, and Ikpoро communities, which are located in the Gbaramatu Kingdom of Delta State.
The incident was first reported to have occurred late on Wednesday afternoon, specifically around 17:50 hours.
This confirmation was formally released on Thursday by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Andy Odeh, through an official statement detailing the initial findings of the event.
Odeh noted that preliminary observations from the site indicated a significant pressure drop, a sign that is consistent with a loss of containment on a pipeline belonging to the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company.
He emphasized the company’s immediate focus by stating, “Our priority at this time is the safety of nearby communities and the protection of the environment.”
He further explained that immediate action has been taken, adding, “Emergency response procedures have been activated, and we are working closely with relevant authorities and community leaders to ensure a coordinated approach to mitigate impact.”
Odeh reiterated the company’s ongoing commitment to responsible operations, stressing that the NNPC Limited remains dedicated to upholding the highest safety and environmental standards.
The statement concluded with a promise of transparency regarding the unfolding situation, reading, “Further updates will be provided as more confirmed information becomes available.”
