The Nigeria Labour Congress plans to discuss its initiative to raise the retirement age for civil officials to 65 years with President Bola Tinubu.
According to The Punch, the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, on Sunday, said that the labour movement was continuing its move which had begun under the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The NLC urged Buhari to raise the retirement age for public employees during the 2023 May Day celebrations.
The minister of state for labour at the time, Festus Keyamo, claimed that Buhari, who was nearing the end of his term, would not be able to handle the situation.
“If accepted by the Federal Government, the process to implement the change to 65 years is one that cannot be finished before the end of Buhari’s term in office. Therefore, I suppose that will be something the future administration has to deal with,” Keyamo said.
Teachers employed by the government at all levels are already benefiting from the introduction of a new retirement age.
On Sunday, when questioned about whether Tinubu and the congress will discuss the issue, the NLC President responded, “Yes.
“Therefore, we are requesting that the retirement age and length of service requirements for the whole public sector, including the civil service, be raised to 65 and 40 years of service.”
