NIPCO Gas, in partnership with Nigerian National Petroleum Company Gas Marketing Limited has launched the Lekki Gas Distribution Project and the Lekki Power Plant.
The collaboration between NIPCO Gas and NGML began in June 2022 with the aim of supplying and distributing natural gas in the Lekki Gas Distribution Area, according to The Punch.
In November 2022, the NGML-NIPCO Gas joint venture further solidified its efforts by signing a Gas Infrastructure and Development Agreement with the Lekki Free Zone Development Company.
This agreement ensures the provision of natural gas to industries within the zone and supports the operations of the new power plant, marking a significant step forward in enhancing energy infrastructure in the region.
“We are proud to announce that with the support of NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, today, 28th August 2024, NGML-NIPCO Gas JV is commissioning the prestigious Lekki Gas Distribution Project and inaugurating the Lekki Power Plant,” NIPCO Gas Managing Director, Nagendra Verma, said at the event held on Wednesday.
According to Verma, the infrastructure developed by NGML-NIPCO Gas JV has a capacity of over 100 million standard cubic feet per day.
He highlighted that the City Gate Station, constructed by the NGML-NIPCO Gas joint venture, has a gas flow capacity ranging from 5 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) to 25 mmscfd, with the potential to extend beyond 100 mmscfd.
Additionally, he said the Lekki Free Zone now boasts a gas-based power plant with a capacity of 24 megawatts.
“This milestone marks a significant step towards unlocking and harnessing the nation’s abundant natural gas while the economic development of Nigeria.
“NGML-NIPCO Gas JV is sure that the infrastructure created is certainly going to attract more and more industries to set up their facilities within and outside LFZDC. The supply of piped natural gas by NGML-NIPCO JV will certainly help in the development of the Lekki Free Zone and Free Zone Enterprise licensed by NEPZA in an exponential manner.
“NIPCO Gas believes that the collaboration between NGML-NIPCO Gas will attract industries to set up their facilities, as Lekki Free Zone has many advantages, like proximity to the seaport, export promotion zone advantages, and improving road connectivity-hence providing better logistics for movement of raw materials or finished goods,” the MD said.
He said that the NGML-NIPCO Gas joint venture has established a natural gas distribution network along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, supplying gas to various industries to meet their energy needs.
He added that the distribution network is currently being extended to Ibadan in Oyo State and Abeokuta in Ogun State.
The MD of NGML, Justin Ezeala, commended all who contributed to the success of the projects.
Ezeala said he was proud of the NGML team, commending the NNPC for making gas distribution a reality.
