Nintendo announced on Thursday that the much-anticipated Switch 2 hybrid console will be released this year, promising upgrades such as a larger screen and bigger controllers.
In a video trailer, the company showcased a transformation of the console, starting with the current version before expanding the tablet by detaching the controllers.
The joy-cons then grow in size and switch to a matte black color, signaling a new design for the updated device.
The Switch 2 features joysticks and controller covers available in light blue and red variations. The joy-con covers appear to be magnetically attachable to the controllers, allowing them to easily connect when removed from the main tablet, particularly useful when propping up the console on its stand or docking it to play on a TV.
Additionally, the console includes an improved U-shaped kickstand, which can be adjusted further back, allowing the device to lie almost flat on a surface.
The overall design of the Switch 2 closely resembles the mock-ups that had been leaked prior to its official announcement.
Nintendo has not provided a specific release date for the Switch 2 but announced that more details will be revealed during its next “Nintendo Direct” online event on April 2.
The company also confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backward compatible, allowing players to enjoy their old Switch games on the new model.
With the current-generation Switch having been released in March 2017 and nearing an eight-year lifespan, Nintendo hopes the Switch 2 will revitalize console sales.
Typically, most console makers introduce new models every six to seven years, making the Switch 2 a long-awaited upgrade.
