Nintendo Switch 2 sells record 3.5m console in four days

Nintendo announced on Wednesday that it has sold over 3.5 million units of its new Switch 2 console in just four days, setting a new record as the fastest-selling gaming device in the company’s history.

The Japanese gaming giant launched the Switch 2 globally on June 5, and its strong debut puts it on track to meet the company’s forecast of 15 million units sold by the end of the current financial year, which runs through March 2026.

“Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go,” said Doug Bowser, President and Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America.

The second-generation console builds on the success of the original Switch, which has sold more than 152 million units since its 2017 debut. The hybrid device helped cement Nintendo’s place in the global gaming market, thanks to blockbuster titles such as The Legend of Zelda series and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which became a global sensation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Switch 2 features a larger screen, enhanced graphics, and backward compatibility with existing Switch games. It launched alongside new titles including Mario Kart World, which helped drive early sales.

Outside Nintendo stores worldwide, including in New York City, fans queued in costume to be among the first to get their hands on the new console, underscoring the brand’s continued cultural relevance and market pull.

With competition intensifying in the gaming sector, the successful launch of the Switch 2 signals a strong start to Nintendo’s next chapter.
