The National Identity Management Commission has issued new access guidelines for Nigerians seeking to update their National Identification Number records via its self-service portal.
In a statement released Thursday and signed by the Head of Corporate Communications Unit, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, NIMC clarified that access to the portal is restricted to the same browser and device used during the initial account registration.
The Commission said the measure is aimed at strengthening data security and preventing unauthorized access.
NIMC explained that once a self-service account is created, access is restricted to the exact device and browser used during registration.
Attempts to log in from a different device or browser may be denied, as the system is programmed to reject unfamiliar configurations to safeguard user data.
“Your self-service account is uniquely tied to the browser and device used during registration. Access to your account is therefore limited to that specific browser on that particular device,” the Commission noted.
The Commission further warned users not to clear their browser cache, as this could reset essential settings and lead to account lockout.
In such cases, users are allowed only five attempts to request an unlock. Exceeding this limit will require a formal unlinking process before access can be restored.
“These are some of the measures put in place by the Commission to safeguard and protect the identity of users,” NIMC noted.
NIMC urged all applicants seeking to modify their NIN data to strictly follow the new access guidelines.
The Commission stressed that adherence will help prevent unnecessary disruptions and ensure a seamless user experience.
“Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as the Commission continues to safeguard your data and improve service delivery,” the statement added.
The self-service modification portal is a key component of NIMC’s broader push to digitize identity management and improve access to essential services for Nigerians.
In October, the Commission announced it would discontinue data modification services at all NIN enrolment centres nationwide, directing applicants to use the self-service portal for any updates to their NIN records.
