Nigeria’s fuel consumption drops to 1.44bn litres in June – NMDPRA

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority says fuel consumption fell in June 2025, with total fuel evacuation dropping to 1.44 billion litres.

Director of Public Affairs, George Ene-Ita, confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that daily consumption averaged 48 million litres, revising earlier reports that had placed it at 38.94 million litres, according to NAN.

He noted that the June figure of 1,440,768,129 litres marked a 16.42 per cent decline from May’s 1,768,812,804 litres—over 290 million litres lower.

According to Ene-Ita, the June total translates to a daily average evacuation of 48,025,604 litres, calculated by dividing the month’s supply by its 30 days.

A breakdown of the figures showed that supply of Automotive Gas Oil, or diesel, rose by 1.73 per cent to 432.18 million litres in June, up from 424.83 million litres in May, the NMDPRA report added.

Despite the increase in diesel supply, its distribution (truck-out) fell by 23.23 per cent, dropping from 552.35 million litres in May to 424.06 million litres in June.

The report also showed that Household Kerosene supply and distribution declined by 13 per cent, sliding from nearly nine million litres in May to 7.79 million litres in June.

Automotive gasoline recorded the steepest drop, plunging by almost 48 per cent—from 72.36 million litres in May to 37.66 million litres in June.

The report noted that overall fuel distribution fell by 16.54 per cent in the same period.

It also detailed truck-out volumes by state, accounting for the 1.44 billion litres evacuated in June. Lagos received the highest share at 205.66 million litres, followed by Ogun with 88.69 million litres, the Federal Capital Territory with 77.51 million litres, and Oyo with 72.81 million litres.

The NMDPRA said the drop in supply and distribution reflects persistent challenges in the petroleum midstream and downstream sectors, affecting national fuel consumption in June. It pledged to work with stakeholders to improve distribution and ensure uninterrupted supply nationwide.
