Nigerians spent N1.3tn on petrol in June – NMDPRA

Nigerians expended about N1.3 trillion on Premium Motor Spirit in June 2025, as nationwide consumption rose to 1.44 billion litres, according to new data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

The figures highlight the country’s heavy dependence on petrol for transportation and self-generation of electricity amid persistent power supply challenges.

Following the removal of fuel subsidies two years ago, expenditure on petrol has surged, pushing household and business energy costs to record levels.

NMDPRA’s truck-out report for June showed that Lagos, Ogun, and the Federal Capital Territory were the top petrol consumers. Lagos alone accounted for 205.7 million litres, valued at N185.1 billion at an average pump price of N900 per litre.

Ogun State followed with 88.7 million litres worth N79.8 billion, while the FCT consumed 77.5 million litres, translating to N69.8 billion.

Other high-consuming states included Oyo, which received 72.8 million litres valued at N65.5 billion.

At the lower end of consumption, Jigawa State received the least petrol allocation in June with 9.4 million litres valued at N8.5 billion. Ebonyi followed with 10.5 million litres (N9.5 billion), while Yobe and Bayelsa recorded 11.7 million litres (N10.5 billion) and 11.9 million litres (N10.7 billion) respectively.

Regionally, the South-West led the country with 452.9 million litres, worth N407.7 billion. Beyond Lagos, Ogun and Oyo, Osun consumed 35.5 million litres (N31.9 billion), Ondo 35.1 million litres (N31.5 billion), and Ekiti 15.3 million litres (N13.7 billion).

The North-Central zone ranked second, accounting for 247.4 million litres at a value of N222.4 billion. The FCT topped the region with 77.5 million litres (N69.8 billion), followed by Niger with 40.7 million litres (N36.6 billion), Kwara with 34.8 million litres (N31.3 billion), Benue with 25.7 million litres (N23.1 billion), Nasarawa with 25.1 million litres (N22.6 billion), Kogi with 24.1 million litres (N21.7 billion), and Plateau with 19.4 million litres (N17.5 billion).

The North-West accounted for 230 million litres of petrol in June, valued at N207 billion. Kano was the region’s largest consumer at N61.4 billion, followed by Kaduna (N38.8 billion) and Sokoto (N33.3 billion). Kebbi recorded N27.3 billion, Katsina N22.3 billion, and Zamfara N15.3 billion, while Jigawa posted the lowest spend at N8.5 billion.

In the South-South, consumption reached 224.9 million litres, translating to N202.9 billion. Delta State led with N61.6 billion, followed by Rivers (N40.1 billion), Edo (N38.8 billion), Akwa Ibom (N30.4 billion) and Cross River (N20.7 billion). Bayelsa ranked among the lowest in the zone with N10.7 billion.

NMDPRA data indicated that the North-East consumed 152.8 million litres of petrol in June, valued at N137.5 billion. Adamawa led the region with N51.2 billion, while Bauchi followed with N27.9 billion. Gombe and Borno recorded N17.3 billion and N17.0 billion respectively, with Taraba at N13.6 billion and Yobe the lowest at N10.5 billion.

The South-East posted the country’s lowest spending, with 132.7 million litres valued at N119.6 billion. Anambra topped the zone at 40.5 million litres (N36.5 billion), followed by Imo with 30.6 million litres (N27.6 billion). Enugu recorded 27.4 million litres (N24.7 billion), Abia 23.7 million litres (N21.3 billion), while Ebonyi was lowest at 10.5 million litres (N9.5 billion).

The figures underscore Nigeria’s uneven petrol consumption pattern, reflecting variations in population size, vehicle density, and economic activity.

Urban and industrial centres such as Lagos, Ogun, Abuja, Oyo, and Kano dominated nationwide demand, while sparsely populated states including Jigawa, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, and Yobe consumed significantly less.
