To assist families throughout this “period and beyond,” uLesson, a Nigerian edtech firm, has announced plans to cut educational software subscription prices by 50% “indefinitely.”

“These are difficult times for households. @ulessonapp will drop educational software subscription prices by 50% indefinitely to support Nigerian families through this period and beyond. I pray strength and resilience for everyone,” Sim Shagaya announced on X on Tuesday

Sim Shagaya, the founder of uLesson, made an announcement regarding a significant change in the pricing structure of the online learning platform. This move, as highlighted by Ayooluwa Nihinlola, the CEO of uLesson, aims to alleviate the impact of economic challenges faced by families.

Recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics reveals that in January 2024, Nigeria experienced a headline inflation rate of 29.90%, up from 28.92% in December 2023. This reflects a notable 0.98% increase, indicating a continuous upward trend in inflationary pressures and reflecting broader economic challenges.

The surge in inflation has direct consequences on the daily lives of millions of Nigerians, particularly in a country where food prices are rising rapidly, creating additional strain for households with limited resources. The escalating costs of goods add pressure to household budgets, making it increasingly challenging for many to afford essential items.

The impact of inflation extends beyond individual households, contributing to larger economic challenges such as unemployment, currency devaluation, and infrastructure deficits in Nigeria. This challenging economic environment further complicates the financial situation for many, making it difficult for them to afford educational subscriptions, including those offered by uLesson.

uLesson’s educational plans, as listed on the company’s website, include a minimum 3-month plan priced at ₦20,000, a 6-month plan at ₦50,000, and a lifetime plan at ₦150,000. However, with the recent announcement on X, users can now benefit from a significant reduction, paying only half of the original costs.

Founded by Sim Shagaya in 2019, uLesson aims to address educational gaps for K-7 to K-12 students across Africa by providing affordable, high-quality, and accessible education through technology.

The online learning app covers various subjects, including mathematics, English language, basic technology, business studies, physics, economics, literature in English, and financial accounting. The revised pricing structure reflects uLesson’s commitment to making education more accessible amidst challenging economic conditions.

Additionally, the organization assists students in getting ready for various examinations such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, National Examination Council, and General Certificate Examination.

Access to live lessons, video libraries, mock exams, homework help, tests, and quizzes on the platform is available to students in numerous African countries. These countries include Uganda, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Gambia, Kenya, and Rwanda.
