Nigerian banks close early on crucial elections eve

Nigerian banks have communicated to their customers that they will close physical operations earlier on Friday in preparation for the 2023 presidential election.

This information was communicated via emails to the customers of banks.

AmBusiness have confirmed the emails sent by some commercial banks like First Bank, Wema Bank, Stanbic IBTC,  Access Bank, Sterling Bank, and Standard Chartered Bank

The emails contain information about the commercial bank’s early closure and an advice to customers to make use of alternative means of bank transactions such as USSD and the bank apps.

The email sent by First Bank to its customers reads,  “Kindly be informed that our branches nationwide will close to customers earlier than usual on Friday, 24 February 2023 by 1:00 pm.”

Wema Bank also sent an email stating it would close by 12 noon on Friday and reopen again on Monday February 27.

The bank said, “This is to notify you that all of our branches will be closing early ot 12 noon on Friday. February 24th. 2023.

“This closure is to ollow citizens of our great country to make necessary plonS ond preporotions to fulfill their civic duties on Saturday February 25, 2023.

“Ali our branches will resume regular operations on Monday. February 27th. 2023.”

Stanbic Bank in the email sent said it would close by 1pm. However, it will continue to attend to customer’s call during the closure period.

“Please be informed that our branches will close by 1pm on Friday, 24 February 2023.

“Our Customer Contact Center will also not be available on Saturday, 25 February and Sunday, 26 February 2023 to attend to your calls and requests because of the election. Please click here to use our self-service portal for self-resolution.

“Kindly use our alternative channels listed below to carry out transactions after 1pm on 24 February 2023 and all through the weekend.”

Access Bank stated in the closure notice sent to their customers that they would close by 12 noon on Friday to give room for both Staff and customers to prepare for the forthcoming election.

“Our branches will close early on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 12 noon. This is to allow for the timely departure of customers and staff to their respective locations in preparation for the 2023 general elections scheduled for Saturday, February 25, 2023,” the bank said.

Standard Chartered Bank’s email reads, “Kindly note that our branches will close to clients earlier than usual on Friday, February 24. 2023. All branches will close by 12:30pm on Friday, February 24, 2023 to re-open on Monday, February 27, 2023.

“Our alternate banking channels, listed below, remain available 24hrs a day for your convenience.”

Sterling banks says it would close all branches by 1pm on Friday in the email sent to their customers.

The notice reads, “As we join our fellow citizens to participate in the 2023 General Elections on the 25th of February, our branches will be closed at 1 PM on Friday, 24th.”
