Nigeria, US explore stronger collaboration on consumer protection

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has engaged the United States Embassy in Abuja in discussions aimed at strengthening consumer protection ties between both countries.

In a statement on X on Monday, the commission said the talks focused on enhancing Nigeria–US collaboration to advance consumer protection.

“Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), led by its Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Mr. Tunji Bello, today hosted the Deputy Economic Counsellor of the U.S. Embassy, Mr. Joseph Giblin, at its Corporate Headquarters in Abuja,” FCCPC said.

“Mr. Bello was joined by the Executive Commissioner (Operations), Mr. Louis Odion and Executive Commissioner (Corporate Services), Hajia UmmuSalma Isyaku Rabiu.”

On September 11, the FCCPC revealed that Nigerian consumers submitted more than 9,000 complaints across 30 sectors between March and August 2025.

The highest number of cases came from the banking, fast-moving consumer goods, and financial technology sectors.

The commission noted that complaints in banking and fintech were mostly financial, with recurring issues around loan deductions, account charges, and failed transactions.
