Nigeria sets 2060 target for net-zero emissions

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated Nigeria’s pledge to reach net-zero emissions by 2060, aiming to balance the greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere with those removed.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari set Nigeria’s target for net-zero emissions by 2060 at the 2021 COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

On Monday, President Tinubu reaffirmed this commitment at the opening of the second Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary for Solid Minerals Development and head of the Nigerian delegation, Faruk Yusuf, the president stated that Nigeria is pursuing a “just and rapid transition to a low-carbon economy.”

“In renewed determination, the Federal Government of Nigeria has made a clear pathway to net-zero by year 2060, aligned with a just transition that safeguards jobs and industrial capacity,” Tinubu said.

“We have approved the Climate Change Act, 2021; as well as developed an all-society andeconomy-wide NDC 3.0, 2025 with a clear roadmap for annual public reporting.”

The president highlighted that Nigeria is implementing pilot projects on green and blue hydrogen, alongside utility-scale storage systems, to enhance grid reliability.

He added that the country is fast-tracking gas-to-power, solar, and wind initiatives under its Mission 300 agenda to broaden energy access while reducing emissions.

According to the World Bank, around 70 per cent of Nigerians still lack access to clean cooking fuels, with millions depending on firewood and charcoal.

President Tinubu stated that Nigeria is launching a nationwide distribution of clean cookstoves and LPG cylinders, aiming to cut household air pollution by 60 percent by 2030.

On financing, he added that the country plans to mobilise substantial climate funds over the next five years, directing at least 40 percent toward adaptation and resilience for vulnerable communities.

“Climate ambition must translate into concrete, scalable and impactful action,” the president added.
