Nigeria registers Tax-ID on global platform to boost digital trade

Nigeria has made a significant leap in its digital trade journey with the global registration of its Tax Identification Number and the Federal Inland Revenue Service’s designation as the country’s official Peppol Authority.

Supported technically by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, this achievement registers Nigeria’s TIN under the ISO/IEC 6523 International Coding System, granting Nigerian individuals and businesses global recognition in cross-border transactions.

The move represents a major step toward streamlining trade, tax administration, and compliance.

With FIRS now acting as Nigeria’s Peppol Authority, businesses can seamlessly connect to the global network. This integration promises faster payments, lower administrative costs, less paperwork, and enhanced competitiveness for Nigerian exporters and service providers.

FIRS stated that the initiative streamlines compliance for taxpayers while boosting investor confidence in Nigeria.

“This milestone simplifies compliance for taxpayers, enables smoother cross-border transactions, and strengthens confidence in Nigeria as a global trade and investment hub,” the agency noted.

Under the new framework, Tax-IDs linked to individuals’ National Identification Numbers and businesses’ Corporate Affairs Commission registration numbers are now recognized internationally.

This unified system reduces duplication, prevents administrative errors, and simplifies compliance across federal and state levels. For both multinational corporations and small enterprises, it brings greater efficiency and strengthens credibility in global transactions.
