Nigeria now depends on food from 'war-torn' Ukraine - Obi laments

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, Peter Obi, voiced his dismay at the current state of the economy and brought up the alarming reality that Nigeria is now dependent on the war-torn nation of Ukraine for food help.

The Times reported that, In his remarks on Monday, Obi recalled moments in 2015 when the Nigerian economy was performing better than the Ukrainian one.

The former governor of Anambra State said that “In 2015, Nigeria’s GDP per capita was $2,680, whereas Ukraine’s was $2,125.”

He pointed out that “In 2022, the situation had reversed, with Nigeria’s GDP per capita falling to $2,184 and Ukraine’s surpassing $4,000.”

Obi says that “Nigeria has not produced anything since 2015. He attributes this decline in economic growth on a lack of leadership throughout the time.”

In an effort to address the critical food crisis impacting over 1.3 million people in northeastern Nigeria, Ukraine has given 25,000 tonnes of wheat to Nigeria.
