Nigeria issues security advisory on Google Chrome vulnerabilities

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission has issued a security advisory alerting the public to multiple vulnerabilities identified in Google Chrome.

In a notice posted on its official X handle, the Commission warned that the flaws could expose users to significant risks if exploited and outlined recommended measures for protection.

“Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Google Chrome. The most severe of these could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on a user’s system,” they stated.

This implies that attackers may gain unauthorized access to a user’s device and execute malicious actions without their consent.

According to the Commission, successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities could enable attackers to:

Attackers could install programs, view, delete or alter files, and create new accounts with full administrative rights. These actions may expose sensitive personal data, disrupt system functionality, and result in loss of control over devices.

The NDPC urged users to act immediately. It recommended that users:

Apply Google Chrome updates without delay.

Use standard (non-administrative) accounts for daily activities to reduce potential damage.

Last year, the National Commissioner of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, revealed that the Commission was actively investigating 17 major data breach cases spanning sectors such as finance, technology, education, consulting, government, logistics, and gaming/lottery.
