The Joint Revenue Board, formerly known as the Joint Tax Board, alongside the Nigerian Revenue Services, previously called the Federal Inland Revenue Service, have announced the launch of the Nigerian Tax ID Portal.
The organisations disclosed that the portal will officially go live on January 1, 2026, marking a major step in the ongoing tax reform and digitalisation drive.
The new platform is designed to enable individual Nigerians and businesses to retrieve their Tax Identification Number, now referred to as Tax ID, using existing national identification records. Individuals will access their Tax ID using their National Identification Number, while businesses will do so with their Corporate Affairs Commission registration number.
Earlier, the Federal Inland Revenue Service had announced that the NIN issued by the National Identity Management Commission has automatically become the Tax ID for individual Nigerians, while the CAC registration number will serve as the Tax ID for registered businesses.
The adoption of NIN and CAC numbers has addressed concerns that Nigerians would be required to undergo another lengthy and cumbersome process to obtain a separate tax identification number from 2026, particularly for banking and financial transactions.
The Tax Identification Number is described as a unique, system-generated number assigned to all taxable persons in Nigeria for the purpose of tax administration and compliance.
According to the Joint Revenue Board and the Nigerian Revenue Services, individuals who wish to retrieve their Tax ID are required to visit www.taxidjtb.gov.ng or www.taxidnrs.gov.ng.
They are to click on the “Individual” tab on the homepage and select the National Identification Number option.
Users will then be required to enter their 11-digit NIN and click on “Retrieve Tax ID”.
After that, they must enter their first name, last name, and date of birth exactly as captured by the National Identity Management Commission and then click on “Continue”.
Upon successful verification, a 13-digit Tax ID will be displayed.
For non-individuals and registered entities, users are required to visit www.taxidjtb.gov.ng or www.taxidnrs.gov.ng.
They are to click on the “Corporate” tab and select the appropriate organisation type.
The next step requires entering the applicable CAC registration number and clicking on “Retrieve Tax ID”.
Once verified, the 13-digit Tax ID for the entity will be displayed.
Meanwhile, the development is taking place against the backdrop of broader tax reforms introduced by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Four tax reform laws have been enacted under the current administration, with two of the laws taking effect in June 2025, while the remaining two are scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026.
Despite controversies surrounding two of the laws, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, told journalists on Friday that the implementation would proceed as planned from January 1.
Oyedele stated that the new tax laws would deliver significant tax relief across the economy.
He explained that about 98 per cent of Nigerian workers would either pay no Pay As You Earn tax or pay lower taxes under the new framework.
He also disclosed that approximately 97 per cent of small businesses would be exempt from corporate income tax, value added tax, and withholding tax, while large companies would benefit from reduced tax liabilities.
According to him, the tax reform laws are designed to promote economic growth, inclusivity, and shared prosperity across the country.
Oyedele further stated that the tax reform bills spent nine months at the National Assembly between October 2024 and June 2025, which allowed sufficient time for early preparations.
He added that since the laws were signed, the government has spent the last six months focusing on capacity building, system upgrades, and stakeholder sensitisation to ensure smooth implementation.
