NERC, state regulators, DisCos meet to address consumer tariffs

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Monday convened a meeting with state regulators, electricity distribution companies, and other stakeholders to tackle transition challenges in the power sector amid growing concerns over consumer tariffs.

The two-day forum, currently holding in Lagos, is NERC’s third quarterly power sector meeting this year.

It follows rising tensions between state governments and distribution companies over who holds the authority to set electricity tariffs, prompting the commission to summon all parties for deliberation.

In separate posts on its social media platforms on Monday, the commission confirmed the participation of state electricity regulatory commissions and bureaus at the meeting, alongside other stakeholders.

Discussions also featured the proposal to establish a Forum of Regulators aimed at fostering collaboration and strengthening state-level electricity regulation.

“At a roundtable with SERCs/SERBs, discussions focused on challenges in metering, account setup, and SubCo governance structures, alongside calls for a Forum of Regulators to drive ongoing collaboration and strengthen state electricity regulation,” the commission said.

NERC stated that the third NESI Stakeholders Meeting of 2025 brought together State Electricity Regulatory Commissions/Bureaus and major industry players to deliberate on key sector reforms, including asset and liability delineation, transfer of capping responsibilities to state regulators, and customer band migration.

“This quarterly meeting continues to serve as a vital platform for collaboration, alignment, and progress in shaping the future of Nigeria’s electricity supply industry,” it added. The commission has yet to disclose the details of the meeting, which continues on Tuesday.

Attempts to reach NERC’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Dr. Usman Abba-Arabi, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
