The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has launched an investigation into all electricity distribution companies after reporting 38 deaths and 19 injuries linked to electrical incidents in the second quarter of 2025.
According to its Q2 2025 report, no casualties were recorded by generation companies or the Transmission Company of Nigeria, while all DisCos reported incidents.
“Out of the fifty-seven (57) casualties reported in the quarter, the licensees with the highest number of casualties were Ibadan (11), Kano (10), Benin (5), Eko (5) and Jos (5) DisCos, which represented 19.30 per cent, 17.54 per cent, 8.77 per cent, 8.77 per cent and 8.77 per cent of the total, respectively,” the report reads.
The commission noted that, as in previous quarters, the DisCos continued to be responsible for most of the safety incidents recorded in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.
NERC stated that the DisCos were responsible for 100 percent of the casualties recorded in Q2 2025, up from 92.98 percent in Q3 2024, 93.33 percent in Q4 2024, and 100 percent in Q1 2025.
The commission identified wire snaps, illegal or unauthorised access, vandalism, and unsafe acts or conditions as the major causes of electricity-related accidents.
The regulatory body said it would take enforcement actions where necessary and continue to monitor the implementation of accident reduction strategies while promoting health and safety across the NESI.
It added that it conducts biannual health and safety meetings, monitors compliance, and supervises accident compensation settlements to ensure fairness and transparency.
