The Nigerian Export Promotion Council has partnered with the Nigerian Data Protection Commission to create a framework aimed at securing personal and corporate data within Nigeria’s export sector.
This initiative highlights the importance of data protection in enhancing trust and facilitating trade in the export market.
The Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Nonye Ayeni, made this disclosure on Wednesday during a meeting with the commissioner of the Nigerian Data Protection Commission, Vincent Olatunji in her Abuja office, according to TheCable.
Ayeni highlighted the importance of protecting sensitive data for the numerous registered exporters in Nigeria, who are striving to meet international contract obligations for exporting locally made products.
She noted that effective data protection could enhance Nigeria’s reputation in the global market, leading to positive endorsements and potentially increasing foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country.
Also speaking at the meeting, Olatunji said the commission’s mandate includes collaborating with key stakeholders to protect the rights of individuals to data privacy.
Olatunji emphasized that the NDPC’s role is to facilitate safe transactions involving personal data, prevent manipulation, and help Nigerian businesses stay competitive internationally through robust legal safeguards.
He urged the NEPC to establish a data protection and control unit to oversee data processing and ensure compliance with data protection principles.
Additionally, he stated that the NDPC would provide capacity-building programs for NEPC officers to ensure adherence to global best practices in data protection.
