Nepal’s new PM resumes office amid economic challenges

Nepal’s new interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, a 73-year-old former chief justice, has unveiled her cabinet, aiming to restore order after deadly anti-corruption protests ousted the previous government.

The ceremony took place under an outdoor awning, with President Ram Chandra Paudel administering the oath of office to three key ministers.

The protests, which began on September 8, were sparked by a social media ban and fueled by long-standing economic woes. The unrest escalated quickly, resulting in the destruction of parliament and key government buildings.

According to government figures, at least 72 people were killed, and 191 are still recovering in hospitals.

Prime Minister Karki’s task is to address protester demands for a corruption-free future ahead of elections in March. Her cabinet includes Om Prakash Aryal as Home Minister, Kulman Ghising as Minister of Energy, Infrastructure, Transport, and Urban Development, and Rameshwor Khanal as Finance Minister.

Aryal is known for tackling corruption, governance, and human rights cases, while Ghising is credited with ending Nepal’s load-shedding problem. Khanal, a respected economist and former finance secretary, faces the challenge of tackling unemployment woes that drove the uprising.

A fifth of Nepal’s youth aged 15-24 are unemployed, according to the World Bank, with a GDP per capita of just $1,447. The new government has its work cut out in addressing these pressing issues and restoring stability to the country.
