NCAA plans real-time baggage tracking for air passengers

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority is set to introduce Radio Frequency Identification baggage tracking across Nigerian airports, enabling passengers to monitor their checked luggage in real time.

The NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, disclosed this in a statement shared on his official X account on Tuesday.

The technology is expected to enhance baggage handling, reduce cases of misrouted and short-landed luggage, and make it easier for passengers and airlines to resolve baggage-related complaints.

Achimugu said the NCAA held a meeting in Lagos with domestic airlines, aviation service providers and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to finalise plans for the transition to RFID baggage tagging.

Achimugu said the system would enable passengers to monitor their luggage in real time throughout the journey, from check-in to arrival at their destination.

“Today, in Lagos, the NCAA met with domestic airlines, other service providers, and FAAN, to finalise plans to migrate to RFID bag tagging.

“This automation technology means that air passengers can track the location of their bags from check-in to arrival at destination, real time.

“We are going to resolve the issue of misrouted bags, shortlanded bag, etc,” he said.

He said the technology, already adopted in other parts of the world, would be deployed in Nigeria for the first time.

He added that effective implementation of the system would improve baggage-handling efficiency, strengthen the resolution of passenger complaints and enhance the overall travel experience.

Achimugu said the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, had approved plans for relevant agencies to assess the technology and submit their findings.

The RFID baggage-tracking initiative is part of broader technology-driven efforts by Nigerian aviation agencies to improve passenger experience, strengthen airport security and boost operational efficiency.
