The Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers’ Association has urged the federal government to conduct a thorough safety assessment of all airport control towers, ensuring compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization standards.
The President of NATCA, Edino Amos, made this disclosure on Tuesday, while commending the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for his leadership, according to NAN.
Amos also praised air traffic controllers for their swift and effective response to the fire at Terminal One of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Monday.
He also praised the Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency for what he described as prompt decision-making and efficient crisis management.
Amos noted that NAMA acted proactively by temporarily closing the airspace in accordance with safety protocols after the fire outbreak.
“After evacuation and activation of contingency measures, the agency coordinated the orderly reopening of the airspace within the hour.
“In a remarkable display of teamwork, ATC and other personnel relocated to the Fire Tower and resumed services seamlessly.
“Air traffic engineers worked with exceptional speed and precision to redeploy critical communication radios to the fire tower,” he said.
Amos stated that the rapid response showcased the professionalism and resilience of Nigeria’s air navigation services.
He added, however, that the incident revealed significant infrastructural and safety gaps that need immediate attention.
