Nigerians have been warned by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control about the sale of Whippy Real Mayonnaise which is unfit for consumption in the country.
The Times reported that according to the food and pharmaceuticals regulator, the post-marketing surveillance team of the agency in Ilorin, Kwara State, conducted an investigation after receiving a customer complaint.
This information was revealed in a statement made by the Director-General of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye, who said that an inquiry revealed the items were acquired from a local company in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control issued a statement informing the public that the Whippy Mayonnaise brand, which is unwholesome, is being sold in Nigeria.
‘’According to an inquiry, the goods were purchased locally from SNF FOODS Limited in Onitsha, Anambra State. From several product batches, samples were chosen at random for laboratory analysis in the NAFDAC Laboratory.
‘’Unsatisfactory results were obtained from the Agency’s laboratory analysis of the product. Although the items were still within their shelf-life, it was found that they had turned rancid and had a tint other than the original mayonnaise colour.”
It has been ordered that all state coordinators and zonal directors conduct surveillance and remove the suspect batches of unwholesome goods.
The manufacturer’s address is listed as Plot 52, Harbour Industrial Estate, Pokobros Avenue, Off Atani Road, Onitsha, Ogbaru LGA, Anambra State.
The agency stated that the subpar Whippy Real Mayonnaise packaged in 245g and 460g in plastic bottles was manufactured in June 2022 and would expire in December 2023.
The batch numbers are A8-0700 NAFDAC registration number, OA2GP220614A (pack size 245g), OA2GP220611A, and OA2GP220617A (pack size 460g).
”NAFDAC urges distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance to avoid consumption, sale, or distribution of the implicated batches of the unwholesome Whippy Real Mayonnaise,” the statement pointed out.
‘’Whippy Real Mayonnaise from the aforementioned batches should be turned in to the NAFDAC office that is closest to you. It is recommended that you get immediate medical counsel from a licensed healthcare provider if you or someone you know has consumed this product or experienced any negative reactions or events following intake.
‘’The public is also advised to contact the nearest NAFDAC office with any suspicions regarding the distribution and sale of unwholesome packaged food goods by calling NAFDAC at 0800-162-3322 or sending an email to [email protected].”
Similar to this, customers were also urged to report adverse events or side effects associated with consuming unwholesome packaged food products to the nearby NAFDAC office, via the E-reporting platforms accessible on the NAFDAC website www.nafdac.gov.ng, or via the NAFDAC mobile application.
