My Mother Is a Witch, the powerful family drama from acclaimed filmmaker Niyi Akinmolayan, has officially crossed the N100 million mark at the Nigerian box office—becoming the 50th Nollywood title to achieve the feat.
Released on May 23, the film delves into the long shadows cast by childhood trauma and the complex process of family reconciliation. At its heart is a poignant story of a daughter’s uneasy reunion with her estranged mother, brought to life through a career-defining performance by Efe Irele, who stars alongside Mercy Aigbe, Timini Egbuson, and Neo Akpofure.
Irele, who also served as executive producer, described her involvement with the project as deeply personal, underscoring the emotional resonance that has drawn audiences to the film.
“When I first came across the script, it wasn’t just the title that stood out it was the emotional weight of the story,” she said. “The character I play is forced to confront years of unresolved pain. It’s a role that demanded everything from me, emotionally and creatively.”
Produced by Anthill Studios in partnership with FrameFlixHQ, the film has earned critical praise for its raw emotional honesty and nuanced storytelling.
Written and directed by Akinmolayan, it further reinforces his reputation as one of Nollywood’s most versatile storytellers.
Akinmolayan’s previous works include box office juggernaut The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai, the sports comedy Prophetess (2021), which earned over N130 million, and the 2022 coming-of-age drama The Man for the Job, each reflecting his range and consistent audience appeal.
