Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, announced that the latest version of its Grok-2 chatbot will now be available for free to all users of X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
This move aims to broaden access to the chatbot’s advanced AI capabilities while maintaining premium benefits for paying subscribers.
According to a blog post by xAI, Premium and Premium+ users on X will continue to enjoy exclusive perks, including higher usage limits and priority access to new features as they are developed. “Premium and Premium+ users get higher usage limits and will be the first to access any new capabilities in the future,” the startup stated.
xAI has been quietly testing the upgraded Grok-2 model over the past several weeks to fine-tune its performance. The new version of the chatbot is expected to deliver faster, more accurate, and contextually aware responses, enhancing the user experience.
While the specifics of the updates were not disclosed, this rollout signals xAI’s efforts to position Grok-2 as a competitive player in the generative AI market, currently dominated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.
The decision to offer Grok-2 for free aligns with Musk’s broader vision to integrate AI technology into the X platform, transforming it into a multi-functional “everything app.” By offering free access to advanced AI tools like Grok-2, Musk is likely aiming to attract a larger user base and increase engagement on the platform, while leveraging subscription models to generate revenue.
This announcement comes amid growing competition in the AI sector, where generative AI tools are being rapidly adopted across industries. xAI’s Grok-2, however, seeks to differentiate itself by being directly embedded into X, offering users conversational AI features seamlessly integrated with their social media experience.
