Musk’s X warns users against illegal prompts for Grok AI

Elon Musk’s xAI secures $10bn in funding to expand AI

Elon Musk’s X is warning users not to direct its Grok AI to produce illegal content, days after the Indian government pressed the platform for information about the chatbot’s misuse.

Over the past week, numerous X users have been commenting on images of people, typically women, by tagging Grok and requesting the chatbot to “put her in a bikini” or “remove her dress.”

“Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content,” the official account of X’s safety team said in a post on Sunday.

Musk reiterated this in response to a post, emphasizing that Grok cannot be held accountable for user-generated prompts.

The AI chatbot, which automatically responds when tagged, followed these user prompts and produced non-consensual sexual images of both celebrities and non-celebrities, including some who appeared to be minors.

“We take action against illegal content on X, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by removing it, permanently suspending accounts, and working with local governments and law enforcement as necessary,” the platform’s safety team said.

xAI, the AI startup founded by Musk that created Grok, clearly prohibits any sexualization of children in its acceptable-use policy.

This isn’t the first controversy involving Grok. The so-called ‘anti-woke’ AI chatbot’s ‘unhinged’ mode caused chaos in India last year by responding to users’ posts with expletives and misogynistic slurs in Hindi slang.

It has also previously praised Adolf Hitler, circulated conspiracy theories, and made inappropriate comments in reply to posts on X.
