Musk ends Model S, X lines as Tesla shifts to humanoid robots

Tesla whistleblower wins legal fight against Elon Musk

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Wednesday that the company will stop producing the Model S and Model X, shifting its Fremont, California factory to manufacture Optimus humanoid robots.

“It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge,” Musk said on the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call. “If you’re interested in buying a Model S and X, now would be the time to order it.”

Following the original Roadster, the Model S and Model X are Tesla’s oldest vehicles.

The company has reduced their prices in recent years as global competition in the electric vehicle market increased.

Tesla introduced the Model S sedan in 2012 and the Model X SUV in 2015. The Model S currently starts at about $95,000, while the Model X is priced around $100,000.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s best-selling Model 3 and Model Y accounted for 97 per cent of its 1.59 million deliveries last year.

The Model 3 now begins at roughly $37,000, and the Model Y at around $40,000, after more affordable versions were launched late last year.

Tesla is developing Optimus as a bipedal, intelligent robot it hopes to eventually sell for tasks ranging from factory operations to childcare.

The company said it plans to unveil the third generation of Optimus later this quarter, describing it as the first version designed for mass production.
