The telecom giant MTN has launched Cover by MoMo, a digital microinsurance product aimed at expanding access to affordable insurance in Uganda. Rolled out in partnership with Sanlam, the service targets users typically excluded from traditional insurance systems.
The offering is simple and accessible. Users can sign up via the MTN MoMo app or USSD, with monthly premiums starting from as low as UGX 500 (approximately $0.14). Payments are automatically deducted from customers’ MoMo wallets—no paperwork, no agents, and no waiting in line.
This latest move reflects MTN’s growing ambitions beyond voice and data. In South Africa, the company recently ventured into motorbike deliveries to simplify access to SIM cards and internet services. Across its African markets, MTN is steadily transforming its MoMo platform into a full-scale financial ecosystem—offering payments, savings, loans, and now, insurance.
With over 60 million active MoMo users across the continent, MTN is positioning itself as a digital-first, life-enabling brand. Whether it’s helping users stay connected, get paid, or now, get protected, MTN is steadily becoming a one-stop platform for daily life.
