Mozambican President cancels WEF trip amid deadly floods

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has canceled his planned trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos following devastating floods in the country that have killed dozens and damaged or destroyed tens of thousands of homes.

The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction said around 500,000 Mozambicans have been affected by the heavy rains that began last month, with 105 deaths linked to the extreme weather.

Preliminary data from the Climate Hazards Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara, show that Mozambique and parts of neighboring South Africa, where authorities declared a national flooding disaster over the weekend—experienced record rainfall between January 11 and 15.

Mozambique’s weather service has issued a new warning for heavy rains across the affected regions on Monday, following weeks of record-breaking rainfall that preceded the recent flooding.

“The situation entails substantial evacuation needs, heightened risks to health facilities and schools, and potential damage to critical infrastructure,” the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement. “Response capacity is being stretched as humanitarian needs continue to escalate.”

Flooding in southeastern Africa is becoming increasingly frequent and severe, as climate change intensifies storms in the nearby Indian Ocean.
