Milan fashion week honours late Giorgio Armani’s legacy

Milan Fashion Week is set to kick off on Tuesday, with the late Giorgio Armani’s final collections taking center stage.

The legendary designer, who passed away earlier this month at 91, will be remembered through his last collection, which will be showcased at Milan’s prestigious Pinacoteca di Brera art museum.

The event will also feature a tribute to Armani, with the museum hosting an exhibition of his top 150 creations from September 24 to January 11.

“We celebrate Milan Fashion Week in memory of one of its founders: Giorgio Armani,” said Carlo Capasa, head of Italy’s chamber of fashion. Armani offered “creative, entrepreneurial, and human lessons” to the industry, Capasa noted, highlighting the importance of vision, quality, and consistency in fashion.

Alongside the tribute to Armani, the fashion week will feature several highly anticipated debuts. Georgian designer Demna will showcase his vision for Gucci in a private event on Tuesday evening.

“If I understand correctly, it’s a presentation, a film that will be kind of Demna’s vision, how he interprets Gucci,” said Luca de Meo, Kering’s new chief executive. Demna took over at Gucci after a decade at Balenciaga, with the task of reversing a slump in sales.

Dario Vitale will also make his debut at Versace, presenting his first collection for the House in an intimate event on Friday night. Other debuts include England’s Louise Trotter at Bottega Veneta and Italian Simone Bellotti at Jil Sander.

These new faces are part of an industry-wide shake-up, with luxury brands struggling with slowing demand in China and global economic uncertainty.

According to Luca Solca, a luxury sector analyst at Bernstein, the changes in creative responsibilities are a response to the need for innovation in the industry.

“With prices going up, you need to give at least something new to consumers,” he said.

The fashion world is watching closely as these new designers bring fresh perspectives to iconic brands.
