Microsoft has released updates for Windows 7,8 and 8.1 despite the fact it stopped supporting Edge on those platforms in January 2023.
Edge 109 was the last version of the browser that was compatible with Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.
Even so, Microsoft is willing to issue crucial patches and infrequent security updates, as the company stated at the start of this year. One such patch has recently been released, providing users of Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and Server 2012 R2 with a crucial upgrade.
Microsoft will eventually stop issuing even those infrequent security patches, it is important to note.
On October 20, 2023, Microsoft will stop providing M109 down-level extended support for Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and Server 2012 R2.
Once that happens, Firefox will be the only widely used browser still actively supporting old Windows versions.
The Firefox 115 Extended Support Release will end in September 2024, however Mozilla Foundation intends to continue providing security updates for Firefox for another calendar year.
