Meta’s Threads closes in on X with 400m monthly users

Meta’s text-based social platform Threads has surpassed 400 million monthly active users, just two years after its launch as a rival to Twitter, now rebranded as X.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced the milestone on Tuesday, noting that the figure was reached “as of a few weeks ago,” representing an increase of 50 million monthly users in the past quarter. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had reported in April that Threads had more than 350 million MAUs.

Originally launched in July 2023 as a fast-follow competitor to X, Threads has grown steadily, adding direct messaging, fediverse integrations, AI-powered features, and customizable feeds over the past year.

Market data from Similarweb shows Threads is narrowing the daily active user gap on mobile. In June 2025, the platform’s iOS and Android apps recorded 115.1 million daily active users — up 127.8% year-on-year — compared with X’s 132 million, down 15.2% in the same period.

X, however, maintains a strong lead in web traffic. Similarweb reported the Musk-owned network logged 145.8 million average daily web visits in June, while Threads drew just 6.9 million.

X’s total monthly active user base remains above 600 million, according to previous figures from former CEO Linda Yaccarino.
