Meta unveils new content controls for minors on Instagram

Instagram developing ‘Picks’ feature to connect users over shared interests

Instagram is introducing new content filters for users under 18, modeled after the PG-13 movie rating system, as part of parent company Meta’s efforts to improve teen safety online.

The system, inspired by the Motion Picture Association’s ratings, will limit exposure to posts containing strong language, risky stunts, drug references, or other mature themes. Meta said the same restrictions will extend to its generative AI tools.

The update comes amid growing criticism and lawsuits accusing Meta of failing to protect minors and downplaying the psychological risks of its platforms.

A September report found that many of Instagram’s safety features for teens either malfunction or are missing altogether. In August, Reuters also reported that Meta’s AI chatbots were allowed to engage in “romantic or sensual” conversations with users.

Meta said on Tuesday that under its latest update, all teen accounts will automatically be placed under PG-13 settings. Parents will have the option to tighten restrictions further using a “limited content” mode that adds stricter content and screen-time controls.

Teen users will also be prevented from interacting with accounts that share age-inappropriate material.

“We hope this update reassures parents,” Meta said in a blog post. “We know teens may try to avoid these restrictions, which is why we’ll use age prediction technology to place teens into certain content protections — even if they claim to be adults.”

In August, Meta introduced new safeguards for teenagers across its AI products, training its systems to prevent flirty interactions and block discussions about self-harm or suicide with minors.
