Meta has officially launched Edits, a new video-editing app designed to rival ByteDance’s CapCut. The app rolled out globally on Tuesday and is now available for download on both iOS and Android devices.
Tailored for content creators, Edits combines AI-powered tools with intuitive features to streamline video creation. The app lets users develop and organize video ideas, apply visual effects, and create content optimized for platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts.
All features will be available free of charge at launch, though Instagram chief Adam Mosseri noted that future versions may introduce premium, paid features.
Meta first revealed Edits was in development back in January, shortly after CapCut was briefly removed from U.S. app stores amid the proposed TikTok ban. While CapCut has since returned, TikTok’s fate in the U.S. remains uncertain—an opportunity Meta appears poised to seize.
Unlike CapCut, Edits allows users to export videos without watermarks, a feature usually locked behind CapCut Pro’s paywall. Meta is clearly aiming to lure creators away from CapCut, offering not only convenience but also cost-saving advantages.
Creators can post directly to Instagram or Facebook from within the app or export their videos for other platforms.
With Edits, Meta is making a strategic push into the short-form content space, offering creators a flexible, watermark-free alternative at no cost—at least for now.
